Rand expresses, with a certain pithy crudeness, an instinct that courses through us all sometimes: I’m the only one who matters! I’m not going to care about any of you any more! She then absolutizes it in an amphetamine Benzedrine-charged reductio ad absurdum by insisting it is the only feeling worth entertaining, ever.

This urge exists everywhere, but why is it supercharged on the American right, where Rand is regarded as something more than a bad, bizarre joke? In a country where almost everyone believes—wrongly, on the whole—that they are self-made, perhaps it is easier to have contempt for people who didn’t make much of themselves. And Rand taps into something deeper still. The founding myth of America is that the nation was built out of nothing, using only reason and willpower. Rand applies this myth to the individual American: You made yourself. You need nobody and nothing except your reason to rise and dominate. You can be America, in one body, in one mind.

She said the United States should be a “democracy of superiors only,” with superiority defined by being rich. Well, we got it. As the health care crisis has shown, today, the rich have the real power: The vote that matters is expressed with a checkbook and a lobbyist. We get to vote only for the candidates they have pre-funded and receive the legislation they have preapproved. It’s useful—if daunting—to know that there is a substantial slice of the American public who believe this is not a problem to be put right, but morally admirable.

This Slate article hits the nail on the head about why Ayn Rand’s philosophy is so despicable and yet so seductive to many Americans

Oh, it gets worse. Turns out Ron Paul’s own previous campaign manager was one of these. Despite raising a whopping 19 million for Paul’s 2008 campaign, Kent Snyder couldn’t afford health insurance himself (due to a pre-existing condition, according to his sister) and died of pneumonia, leaving $400,000 in medical costs that were passed on to his family.

The horrors for Eman al-Obeidi, the woman who accused Gaddafi’s soldiers of rape to a hotel-full of journalists just keep getting worse

kateoplis:

From the Daily Beast:

Now the men Eman al-Obeidi says raped her are suing her. In Libya, as across much of the Middle East, rape victims are doubly traumatized. After their assaults, they are shamed—even murdered—for destroying the family’s honor.

“Women still suffer from outdated cruel concepts that a woman who was raped brought it on herself,” Sarah Leah Whitson, a Libya researcher for Human Rights Watch, says. “She may as well go hang herself because who is going to marry her now.” […]

Libya has no constitution, and the death penalty applies to anyone caught advocating for a  constitution. With no fair laws on the books, women are left to suffer from social codes that are often lethal. […]

In the chaos of Libya today, two doctors working in the eastern city of Ajdabiya have reported that they’ve found condoms and Viagra in the pockets of Gaddafi’s dead soldiers, which they believe indicates a premeditated intent to rape. One physician, Abdul Rahim Aquila Najib, told Al Jazeera, “The Gaddafi soldiers have said that those of your women who celebrate loudly, we will come and we will rape them.”

Another quote:

Because rape victims are at risk of being killed by either their families or that of their attackers, Libya sends victims into social rehabilitation centers. Women, even children, who have been raped, are sent away for “moral” re-education. The only way out of such centers is to marry your attacker. This is a solution some Libyan judges mandate. 72-Year-Old Dies in Meat Grinder

A 72-year-old meat packing worker died after being chopped up in a meat grinder at a troubled packing plant in California.  This is the third tragic accident to take place at the plant in recent years.

The manager of the Central Valley Meat Company said that 72-year-old Leopolodo Guiterrez died Monday morning when someone turned on the massive meat grinder while he was inside cleaning it.

Meat processing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the country. In 1998, it was reported that 30% of all industry workers received serious injuries while on the job and suffered psychological trauma at a rate 27 times higher than the National average.

The Central Valley Meat Company calls this recent death “an accident” and says they will investigate.

To any scumbags out there who are taking this as an opportunity to concern troll about meat processing or the meat industry in California — it’s not the main consumers of products who die in industrial accidents manufacturing them.  It’s workers.  There’s all kinds of disgusting racist baggage attached when people laugh off the lives and deaths of factory workers in industries they don’t like: people who are never going to have to work in anything as unsanitary or dangerous as a Central Valley meat processing plant for their livelihood.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

This poor girl…

It’s pretty scary to think that stuff like this could become common if abortion becomes harder to access

That girl is a fucking idiot.
Whatever just because some girls are mentally retarded doesn’t make killing babies ok. Either deal with it and have the kid or put it up for adoption if you don’t want it that badly. Or hey USE A CONDOM OR BIRTH CONTROL.
The whole ‘it’s my body, it’s my choice’ garbage, dude what the fuck ever, stop being so damn selfish and think of the baby.

&I don’t care what anyone says, yes you’re killing the baby. Even if ‘it’s not alive yet’ you’re still denying it life. It’s like the pro-choice guy said : “I am sure this story probably has most people wanting to vomit and cry at the same time as their hearts break for this little girl. I would also guess however that many of those same people would not even bat an eye if her method of killing her child had been a RU 486 prescription from the local Planned Parenthood, I would goes as far as saying many would praise her for making such a brave choice, the method of killing the child should not matter.”

If I had the choice to go back and do things over I’d do everything exactly the same cos I’d want to kill myself if I didn’t have Kiara in my life.

I’m extremely passionate when it comes to this.

That girl is a fucking idiot.
Whatever just because some girls are mentally retarded doesn’t make killing babies ok. Either deal with it and have the kid or put it up for adoption if you don’t want it that badly. Or hey USE A CONDOM OR BIRTH CONTROL.

I guess you missed the rape part of this.  Did you even bother to read the article before constructing your slut-shaming screed against a 13-year-old rape victim?  Should we require all women to be on birth control just in case they’re raped?  And how young should we start?  Girls as young as nine months old have been the victims of rape.  Now that I think about it, maybe we should just start at birth.  In fact, let’s make birth control opt-out instead of opt-in.  These women - these girls - are obviously too stupid not to be whores anyway.  We need to tell them what to do with their bodies.  It’s the victim’s fault, isn’t it?  If the victim wasn’t such an idiot, none of this would even happen, right?

I am sick of seeing this shit.  A child is, for two years, taken advantage of by a twisted adult, and people call that child an idiot.  They call her ignorant.  They call her a slut.  How dare you.  How dare you call a little girl a “fucking idiot” for being terrified, desperate, and left with no options.  “Use a condom or birth control”?  And just how is a 13-year-old girl supposed to get these things?  If she was so afraid to tell her parents about her pregnancy as to perform an abortion on herself with a pencil, how likely do you think it is that she could go to someone to get birth control?  And what about the 30-year-old scumbag?  Are you suggesting that the sole responsibility for using a condom rests on this girl, the victim?

This - the victim-blaming, the slut-shaming, the restricted access to health services -  is rape culture.  This is the mindset that denies women choice.  This is the mindset that denies women control over their own well-being.  And it plays right into the hands of the pro-life movement.  You don’t agree with abortion?  That’s your belief.  That’s your choice.  You chose not to have an abortion?  Wow, another choice!  Isn’t it great to be able to make all these choices?  This is what being pro-choice is all about.  It’s not about killing babies.  It’s not about abortion itself.  It’s about making sure that women - all of us - have control over our own bodies.  It’s about letting women chose for themselves.

omg. FLAWLESS RESPONSE.

Who is going to shoot Obama?

An audience member at a town hall meeting hosted by Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA), a Tea Party congressman.

According to Blake Aued of the Athens Banner-Herald, who was in attendance, the question “got a big laugh.”

[tpm.]

(via thedailywhat)

Fuck you, Tea Party.  Denounce this stuff or get the fuck out of this country and our politics.  You make a mockery of what this nation is about.

(via heshallfromtimetotime)

Aside from these statements, flying planes into IRS buildings, shooting it out with the police on your way to te Tides Foundation and taking guns to townhalls featuring President Obama, the Tea Party is just like you and I.

Alright I was being sarcastic but we need to seriously reconsider the loyalty of individuals to a democracy, particularly within our society, if such claims are made and subsequenty dismissed as humor in a serious political setting. When we’ve reduced politics to “I don’t agree with you so I’m going to shoot you”, are we then not enabling restrictions on our freedoms? What incentive does President Obama have to rescind the Patriot Act if at any moment some person, even in political climates, wants to gun him down? This is the paranoia that haunts leaders and creates tyrants, we should confront such rhetoric and explain how this behavior ultimately hurts the individual and society. I am not against free speech, I am pro-keeping it real.

(via thenoobyorker)

The thing that absolutely horrifies me about this—aside from, you know, everything else that horrifies me about this—is if someone were to advocate shooting, idk, Sarah Palin at a town hall meeting hosted by a Democrat, that someone would rightly be castigated both by Republicans and Democrats. But this particular someone joking about assassinating the President? If any Republican or Tea Partier denounces them, they will likely stand alone. If any news outlet reports on this, Fox News will fire back nonsense about free speech and paint Democrats as Nazis, and this someone and all the someones who laughed at their clever question will feel supported, justified, validated. And that is horrifying.

What the fuck, conservatives: A Summary.

msavignon:

Proposing legislation that makes miscarriages and abortions punishable by death and advocating for the murder of U.S. citizens who exercise their First Amendment rights? I just can’t. I can’t believe we live in a country where a group of grown ass people can seriously suggest that we put women to death over a private medical issues.

We care about children! Unless they are female and/or gay and/or brown and/or not born within our borders. We want them to grow up to be knowledgeable and productive citizens, except that we want to cut education funding, arts funding, and public broadcasting - and no, we won’t budge on that! Oh, but don’t worry: we will make sure they get outstanding history and science information. We want them to grow up enjoying God’s green earth and God’s creatures except actually, no, we don’t. We’ll teach them that everyone can pull themselves up with their bootstraps, especially those of us who were blessed enough to be white and to inherit their father’s business.

Everyone is equal in this country and that’s what makes it great! Of course, all the laws are enforced equally so as to reflect that … except when they’re not but don’t worry it’s rarely a matter of life or death - oh, oops.

(via formerlyroxy)

The Republicans and anti-choicers are not and have never been concerned about the embryo/fetus/baby. That’s their red herring, that’s their clever disguise. They pretend that this is about a sweet, helpless, innocent unborn child.

The amount of fuck they, in reality and judging by their actual actions, DO NOT GIVE about any born or unborn child in this country (especially those that are not white, Christian, male, middle-class, able, etc) could drown the entire city of Washington D.C.

They care about wombs. They care about control. They have always been focused on controlling wombs and the people who have wombs. Because what they want is for everyone with a womb to use that womb on THEIR timetable, WHEN they approve of it.

They want to enforce a world of “consent to sex equals consent to pregnancy, you should’ve thought of that” and a world of “well, you got raped, so sorry. Sucks to be you, kthnxbai!” because they think it will create a world of obedient heterosexually married people who only engage in sexual activity when married and to procreate, which is the only context in which Republicans are comfortable with it.

And to enforce this notion, they want to make the world as scary, hostile, and outright deadly to deviants as possible. So that anyone who transgresses the “sex is for procreation in a heterosexual marriage and nothing else” paradigm (which is just soooooo 9th century, btw) faces a myriad of terrifying and possibly debilitating or fatal consequences. They want to scare everyone in to doing what they say by taking away all other options.

Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin Wants to Make Miscarriages and Abortions Punishable by Death

In Georgia, State Rep. Bobby Franklin wants to criminalize not just abortions—but miscarriages as well. His 10-page bill would make any “prenatal murder” a felony punishable by death or life in prison—and that includes miscarriages, in the event the woman cannot prove that there was “no human involvement whatsoever in the causation” of her miscarriage.

brb, drinking this entire bottle of wine.

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY, MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU SPEAK IT?

THE WOMAN DOES NOT HAVE TO PROVE HER INNOCENCE; YOU HAVE TO PROVE HER GUILT.

Also, for those shocked by this, I’d point out that Utah has already criminalized miscarriages, after a pregnant 17-year-old girl paid some guy $150 to beat her until she miscarried.  They decided the appropriate response to this event was to criminalize having a miscarriage.

I’ve never heard a good explanation from those who support a “tough stance” on immigration as to why things like this are supposedly necessary, why tearing apart families is okay.  They’re breaking the law, they’re criminals, is always the response.  Well, if that’s the big issue, change the law.  Problem solved.

Anyway, this is infuriating.

Georgia State Rep. Bobby Franklin Wants to Make Miscarriages and Abortions Punishable by Death

roxanneritchi:

heroics | aintitgrand | thequietworld | robin-sparkles | recycleanimals:

In Georgia, State Rep. Bobby Franklin wants to criminalize not just abortions—but miscarriages as well. His 10-page bill would make any “prenatal murder” a felony punishable by death or life in prison—and that includes miscarriages, in the event the woman cannot prove that there was “no human involvement whatsoever in the causation” of her miscarriage.

brb, drinking this entire bottle of wine.

in the event the woman cannot prove that there was “no human involvement whatsoever in the causation”

This fucking country, I can’t even.

Still waiting to hear how defunding Planned Parenthood and public broadcasting, attempting to legalize the murder of abortion providers, redefining rape, and denying pay to government employees who worked for healthcare reform is going to create jobs.

Oh Jon, I have been making that face so frequently these days.  Like whenever the Republicans do anything at all.
HEY GUYS, HOW ABOUT WE CUT DEFENSE SPENDING?  OR PULL OUT OF ONE OF OUR TWO ENDLESS, POINTLESS, UNHELPFUL, EXPENSIVE WARS?  Oh wait, no, the military is fucking sacred to the GOP, sorry I asked.

"Oh, it gets worse. Turns out Ron Paul’s own previous campaign manager was one of these. Despite raising a whopping 19 million for Paul’s 2008 campaign, Kent Snyder couldn’t afford health insurance himself (due to a pre-existing condition, according to his sister) and died of pneumonia, leaving $400,000 in medical costs that were passed on to his family."
