10 Things Anyone Can Do To Help Exonerate Innocent People and Prevent Wrongful Convictions

1. Get connected to stay informed and take action
Join the Innocence Project’s online community to receive regular updates, action alerts, in-depth news and analysis, and other information. Registration is free. Click here to join. Once you register, you can e-mail your friends, family and colleagues to ask them to sign up, too.

2. Donate to the Innocence Project
The Innocence Project is a nonprofit organization that relies on financial support from individuals and foundations. Your donation will help pay for DNA tests, provide staffing for case intake and litigation, support our reform initiatives nationwide, and help educate the public. Click to donate online or by mail.

3. Build relationships with elected representatives
Call or meet with your state and federal representatives well before the legislative session starts and discuss your concerns. By simply introducing yourself to your legislators and their staff before the session starts and providing a brief overview of innocence-related policy concerns, you can establish useful relationships with them and help them see the value of supporting legislation that would protect the innocent. When the session starts, they may reach out to you or take your call because they know you’re actively involved in these issues. For more information and practical tips, see “How to Talk About Innocence-Related Issues with Elected Officials, Organizations, Media, and Others.”

4. Connect with a local Innocence Network organization
Three dozen organizations around the country belong to the Innocence Network, and many of them work on these issues at the state and local levels. You may be able to help with their policy reform efforts, their community outreach, or other aspects of their work – in a professional capacity or as a volunteer. To find a local Innocence Network contact, go to www.innocencenetwork.org.

5. Reach out to the media
When a local or national media outlet runs a story about an exoneration or the causes of wrongful convictions, call or write to the reporter to say you are pleased to see the coverage and interested in seeing additional stories on these issues. Share your perspective and thoughts about why wrongful convictions must be discussed and addressed. Write letters to the editor in response to articles or editorials so that the media – and policymakers who are in a position to help prevent wrongful convictions — know that the public is concerned about these issues. For more information and practical tips, see “How to Talk About Innocence-Related Issues with Elected Officials, Organizations, Media, and Others.”

6. Become more knowledgeable about wrongful convictions – and spread the word
There are scores of books, films, television specials and other resources that can deepen people’s understanding of the causes of wrongful convictions, the need for reform, the challenges people face after exoneration and other issues. Spend some time learning more about the issues, and then share books or films with your friends, coworkers or community members (some of them are great gifts!).View a list of list of films and TV specials on the issues surrounding wrongful convictions and view our recommended reading list.

7. Engage allies in addressing wrongful convictions

Everyone is impacted by wrongful convictions, but some individuals and groups aren’t yet involved in preventing injustice. Ask your friends, colleagues and community organizations to get involved when policy reforms are being discussed; encourage them to join the Innocence Project’s online community. Offer to speak about wrongful convictions at a local Rotary, Kiwanis, or similar civic groups’ meeting. You can address the group yourself, or you can ask a local Innocence Network representative or professor to speak. During the speech, encourage people to become more actively involved in these issues.

8. Work with prisoners and their families in your community

Many exonerees and their families talk about how isolated and ignored prisoners feel. Find a local group that works with prisoners and volunteer to get involved however you’re needed – whether it’s helping in a prison organization’s office or providing support to prisoners and their families. For links to organizations providing a range of services, go to http://prisonactivist.org/links/. For information to share with prisoners (or their families) seeking to contact the Innocence Project about a case, click here.

9. Learn about local procedures and help improve them

Many of the causes of wrongful convictions are decided locally. For example, policies and procedures about conducting lineups and recording interrogations are often set by city and county agencies. As a concerned community member, you have the right to know what the local practices are. Contact the city police, county sheriff and/or other local agencies to find out what they’re currently doing and what the process is for evaluating and revising their policies. If their procedures and policies are not adequate for preventing wrongful convictions, urge decision-makers to change them and reach out to Innocence Network groups to let them know what you’ve learned. For more information and practical tips, see “How to Learn About Local Law Enforcement Procedures and Help Improve Them.”

10. Host a local fundraising and educational event

You, your friends or a group you belong to can organize an event to raise money for the Innocence Project and educate people about wrongful convictions. Some people hold small house parties for six people, while others organize events for 100. Whatever you can do will help spread the word and support our work. Click here to get started on holding an event.

Stop Troy Davis’s Execution, Then Stop The Death Penalty

amnestymidwest:

Troy Davis’s execution has been set for September the 21st. This is a travesty of justice in the particular case of Troy Davis, and the fact that death penalty is still used as a form of punishment in the USA is as lamentable as it is anachronistic.

If you are against the death penalty in all circumstances, and support our campaign to save Mr Davis’s life, then Amnesty needs your help. Sign our petition here, and see here for how you can do your part to organize for Troy.

If you do not know the specifics of the Troy Davis case, then this will show you that there are large swathes of doubt over Mr Davis’s guilt. For twenty years, Mr Davis has pleaded his innocence, and now many key witnesses no longer defend their original testimonies, which they say they were forced to sign by police officers.

If you are in favour of the death penalty, or do not know where you stand on the issue, then we hope that these facts will convince you to support Amnesty’s cause.

1. The death penalty is the ultimate sentence. There is no chance of reprieve, so the evidence on which the judgment is made must be unambiguous and water-tight. All too often, however, people like Troy Davis are sentenced to death without incontrovertible evidence against them. Many of these people are innocent of the crimes for which they are convicted. Indeed, since 1973, over 130 people that have been sentenced to death have been released from death row due to wrongful convictions.

2. Unfortunately, there is strong evidence to support the fact that the application of the death penalty is discriminatory. Defendants are more likely to be sentenced to death if they are not white, or if the victim of the crime is white. Although the USA has a strong legal system that guarantees many fundamental legal rights, it is nevertheless the case that prejudice can creep in and significantly affect the judgment and punishment of a case.

3. Although the death penalty is promoted by many as a deterrent, there is reason to believe that it is not effective in this regard. Firstly, murder rates are highest in those states that, on average, execute more people. This alone does not show that the death penalty is not an effective deterrent, but it does hint at the fact that there are far more factors that affect levels of crime than merely the lack of strong deterrents. In addition, it is plausible to believe that the death penalty in fact increases the gravity of many crimes: if one faces life imprisonment for a crime, one will likely attempt to run or hide. If, instead, one is likely to face the death penalty, one may attempt to ensure that this eventuality does not arise by killing all possible witnesses to the original crime.

4. The death penalty is increasingly seen as immoral around the world. More than two-thirds of all countries no longer use the death penalty. In fact, the process of putting someone to death has been described as cruel, inhuman, and unusual punishment. Extradition of US citizens from Europe back to the US, when there is the possibility of the death penalty being faced, has been forbidden by the European Court of Human Rights on the grounds that the circumstances of living on death row are similar to torture, and thus such extradition would violate international law. For full legal proceedings and all due process to be fulfilled, those on death row frequently spend many years in isolated cells, alternating between hope and despair, and facing unimaginable psychological trauma. Even if one argues that the death penalty itself is justified due to the gravity of some crimes, the application of the death penalty is simply immoral.

5. Finally, if the above arguments are not persuasive, perhaps the fact that the death penalty is extremely costly will be so. The cost of putting someone to death exceeds by far the cost of instead seeking and then convicting someone of life imprisonment. Depending on the state, life-imprisonment may be ten or even twenty times cheaper than the death penalty. In an age when money is short, it is only prudent to abolish the death penalty. Not only do many states face budgetary problems, but the use of extra funds to put someone to death diverts those funds that could be better used to prevent crimes in the first place.

Manolo’s family brought him to the United States from Venezuela when he was very young. And that’s where ICE now wants to deport him to—even though Manolo has no friends or family there and doesn’t speak Spanish.

It gets worse—if they are forced to leave the US, Venezuela may send Manolo’s parents back to China. Meanwhile, Manolo’s younger brother, who is a US-born citizen, would stay in Tennessee.”

Trigger Warning: Rape, Violence and Racism: Justice for Recy Taylor

kittenliberation | mehreenkasana:

Nearly 70 years ago, Recy Taylor was gang-raped at gunpoint. Her attackers admitted to kidnapping and raping her. And nothing was ever done about it.

Rosa Parks and the NAACP fought on Recy’s behalf to send her attackers to prison. But because Recy was black and the assailants were white, her rapists never even faced trial, let alone jail time, even though they confessed to raping her.

Yesterday, after emails from over 6,000 Change.org members, Abbeville Mayor Ryan Blalock and Alabama State Rep. Dexter Grimsley made personal apologies to Recy and her family for the failure to prosecute her attackers. Now it’s time for the city of Abbeville and state of Alabama to follow suit.

Recy is now 91 years old, and all she wants is for her story to be recognized. For the state that denied her justice to admit that it did wrong. “The sheriff never even said he was sorry it happened. I think more people should know about it … but ain’t nobody saying nothing,” Recy said.

Recy’s brother, Robert Corbitt, has spent the last decade of his retirement searching for the facts of the case and seeking justice for Recy. He started a petition on Change.org requesting an apology to his sister from the city of Abbeville and the state of Alabama.

Rep. Grimsley –– an Abbeville native himself –– has vowed to introduce a resolution in the House calling for Alabama to apologize to Recy and all the black women like her whose stories were hushed and names were slandered.

Tell the Alabama state legislature to support Rep. Grimsley’s apology resolution — it’s time for us to stand up for Recy and for Alabama to apologize for letting her down.

Help Recy Taylor get the apology she deserves and public recognition of the injustice perpetrated by signing this petition to Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, Abbeville Mayor Ryan Blalock, the Abbevile police department, and state and city representatives.

Don’t Deport Manolo

dancingonembers | dreamactnow:

Sign the petition to stop Manolo’s deportation. It’ll takes less than a minute.

from the site:

“Manolo is a young person who would be eligible for the DREAM Act. He is a Chinese-American who has lived in Tennessee for almost his entire life. He graduated from high school with honors, and earned a bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University.
