I was looking into the anime version, but it says that it's technically the 3rd installment or something like that? I know it's a video game, too, but, do I need to know video game stuff in order to follow the anime? thanks in advance!

Oh boy, Umineko.

Umineko started out as a sound novel — basically a computerized novel with pretty pictures and sound effects.  The sound novel has 8 story-arcs so far, all of which one can buy or download online.  You can get English translation patches at Witch Hunt.

However there’s also the anime, which is an adaptation of arcs 1-4.  The anime is kind of a contested subject in fandom because it suffered some adaptation decay, having to condense each novel down into 5 or 6 episodes.  However I found it quite enjoyable, and it’s not necessary to read the novels in order to understand the anime.

Also, there are manga adaptations of arcs 1-2, with more planned, and I’ve heard that they’re more faithful to the original novels than the anime was.

Favorite Canon Ship: Maka/Soul Kim/Jackie Sid/Nygus Dammit there aren’t any canon ships in this series, just heavy subtext!  Fucking shonen.  Oh well, I’ll go with Maka/Soul/Blair platonic roomie OT3.

“If this happens I’ll stab my eyes out with a spork” Ship:  I’m not too fond of Kim/Ox, since I much prefer them with their respective partners (who are totally crushing).

“You are one sick bastard” Ship: Maka/Stein.  :[  My only excuse is that Maka is just incredibly shippable and goes well with everyone.

“I dabble a little” Ship: Eruka/Mizune (they’re cute and evil!), Maka/Blair (it would make Soul’s brain explode!), and Marie/Yumi (just marry Yumi instead of the toilet!)

“It’s like a car crash” Ship: Stein/Medusa is pretty car-crashy, sort of like a crazier version of Baltar/Number 6 from BSG.

“Tickles my fancy but not sold just yet” Ship: Maka/Chrona.  I like their BFFness, but I’d feel guilty putting Chrona in a romance situation because I think s/he already has enough confusing shit to deal with.

“Makes no canon sense but why the Hell not” Ship: I saw some Maka/Black*Star fanart once.  It was surprisingly hot.  Like I said, Maka just goes well with everyone.

This is a series of maps charting the shrinkage of Native American lands over time, from 1784 to the present day.  Made because I was having trouble visualizing the sheer scale of the land loss, and reading numbers like “blah blah million acres” wasn’t really doing it for me.  The gif is based on a collection of maps by Sam B. Hilliard of Louisiana State University.  You can see the original map here.

For those who do prefer dealing in numbers, here are some:

By 1881, Indian landholdings in the United States had plummeted to 156 million acres. By 1934, only about 50 million acres remained (an area the size of Idaho and Washington) as a result of the General Allotment Act* of 1887. During World War II, the government took 500,000 more acres for military use. Over one hundred tribes, bands, and Rancherias relinquished their lands under various acts of Congress during the termination era of the 1950s.

By 1955, the indigenous land base had shrunk to just 2.3 percent of its original size.

But I live right next to a reservation and my grandfather and several friends do live there, yet there are no green marks in New York for present day… so am I missing a crucial piece of information about these maps? There’s still Seneca peoples on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. This map alone just wiped out some Native Americans!

edit: jk. apparently this map’s “present day” is actually referring to the present day of 1899. i hope everyone else got that because to think it is representing the current lands held by native americans in 2011 would be wrong.

Yes, the “Present Day” map is missing numerous reservations.  This is because the omitted reservations are so tiny that they would be less than a pixel in size on a map of this scale.  For instance, New York state has 11 reservations, but all are too small to be seen on this map.

If you want to see a larger map that shows all the reservations, click here.

As for the “Present Day” map on this gif, the map was made in 1971, so the “Present Day” is about 40 years out of date.  However, it’s quite similar to the more up-to-date map that I linked in the paragraph above, so it would appear that the reservations haven’t expanded much in the past 40 years.

1) the original map was actually several different maps which were printed on paper and then scanned, so there’s some folds, rips, and discoloration present.

3 reasons I like/love that fandom: HAHA um.  I don’t like Claymore fandom very much.  They’re really small and obscure and produce little in the way of decent fanworks, but what they lack in size, they make up for in obnoxiousness.  HOWEVER: I am very fond of the fanartist GUGA aka 17046 on Pixiv.  She has a pretty style and draws lots of art of Yuma.
